YESICA CALDERON ’21 SHINES AT REGIS

Over $1 million raised at Let It Shine Regis Gala

Freshman Yesica Calderon ’21 (pictured with her mother, Lorena, and Regis Board Chair John Tegan) received the surprise of a lifetime when she was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to Regis. As a student speaker at the Let It Shine Gala in October 2017, Calderon told her story to a crowd of over 300 guests at the Boston Park Plaza.

“‘Welcoming All Without Distinction’ is engraved on the side of Maria Hall here at Regis, and I see it daily as I walk to my classes,” Calderon told the crowd during her speech. “I can sincerely tell you that I read it every time I pass by and I get a sense of peace and happiness—like I belong here, as if this is my destiny.”

The Let It Shine Gala raises funding for scholarships for high-achieving students like Calderon, a Boston Scholar Athlete who boasted a 4.8 GPA at East Boston High School in advanced courses. Calderon plans to use her Regis degree to become an elementary school teacher, a profession that will allow her to serve as a mentor and help children, just like her teachers did for her.

“For so many years I dreamed of what my future might hold,” said Calderon as she wrapped up her speech. “My Regis scholarship has made my dreams come true.”
