Q&A with Benjamin Adams ’24

Biology Major | LAB OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT Minor

Why did you choose to attend Regis?
The science program at Regis really stood out to me amongst other schools because I wanted a tight-knit community where I could build relationships with my professors in smaller classrooms. I have had so many dedicated professors who have helped me network and gave me access to research opportunities on campus where I gained real-world experience. I think this has contributed to my growth over the last four years here and will help me succeed in the future.

Why did you choose biology?

I’ve always been interested in science. My father is a doctor, so I’ve had a lot of exposure to medicine growing up. I love experimenting and learning about the world. I am excited not only to study biology, but to use it to make an impact.

What are your plans for after graduation?

This fall I will be pursuing my PhD at UMass Amerst in their molecular and cellular biology program. I want to focus on cancer research and hopefully develop treatments and save lives in the future. I have lost loved ones to cancer, so I am deeply motivated to try and help other families who are suffering in the same way that mine did.

Tell me about the research opportunities you have had at Regis.

I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Shannon Hogan on ovarian cancer research which focused on identifying a target that could detect ovarian cancer earlier. This hands-on experience is rare, and I do not think I could get it elsewhere. I also secured an internship at Cell Signaling Technologies and McLean Hospital, where I discovered a previously unheard-of connection between impulse control and drinking habits in young adults.

How has Regis helped prepare you for life after Regis?

My internships and on-campus research will set me apart from others applying to jobs and graduate school. I am confident in my lab skills and being able to explain the intricacies of the research process is extremely valuable. I know the real-world experience I gained at Regis will translate directly into my career in the future.

How has your scholarship motivated you?

My scholarship support has given me the freedom to focus on my studies instead of thinking about how to pay for my tuition or having to work on top of that. I was able to develop much more and become a better student and a better scientist.
